Santiago Torres est un artiste français d’origine vénézuélienne et colombienne, né en 1986.

Il vit et travaille à Paris.

Santiago Torres est un artiste-programmeur multidisciplinaire. Il possède des connaissances approfondies en informatique, géométrie, mathématiques et en histoire de l’art. Il a notamment travaillé auprès de grands noms de l’art abstrait géométrique et de l’art cinétique : Julio Le Parc et Nicolas Schoffer. Santiago se forme continuellement aux nouvelles technologies et les utilise directement dans sa création.

Dans ce Focus, nous vous présentons la série Procedural avec laquelle Santiago rend hommage à Aurelie Nemours, représentante majeure de la peinture abstraite. Il s’inspire de ses compositions, ses formes, de son utilisation des contrastes et des aplats de couleurs. Certains tableaux peuvent nous rappeler les célèbres Structures du silence.

Comme le nom de la série l’indique, Santiago a utilisé la programmation procédurale pour concevoir ces 20 tableaux. La génération procédurale est une technique informatique qui permet de créer du contenu numérique de manière automatique et aléatoire, en suivant des règles et des algorithmes définis par le programmeur. Elle est souvent utilisée dans l’univers du jeu vidéo.

Dans un premier temps, Santiago a créé à la main dans son atelier des textures variées à partir de différents matériaux. Il les a ensuite intégrés à un code procédural en 3D qui génère des cubes qui eux-mêmes composent les tableaux. Les œuvres de cette série jouent entre le réel et le virtuel, le naturel et l'artificiel, le hasard et le contrôle.

Santiago Torres is a multidisciplinary artist-programmer. He has a deep knowledge of computer science, geometry, mathematics and art history. He has worked with some of the greatest names in geometric abstract and kinetic art: Julio Le Parc and Nicolas Schoffer. Santiago is constantly learning about new technologies and uses them directly in his creations.

In this Focus, we present the series Procedural, in which Santiago pays tribute to Aurelie Nemours, a major artist of abstract painting. He draws inspiration from her compositions, shapes and use of contrasts and flat colors. Some of the paintings remind us of the famous Structures du Silence.

As the name of the series suggests, Santiago used procedural programming to design these 20 paintings. Procedural generation is a computer technique used to create digital content automatically and randomly, following rules and algorithms defined by the programmer. It is often used in the world of video games.

Initially, Santiago created a variety of textures from different materials by hand in his studio. He then integrated them into a 3D procedural code that generates cubes, which in turn compose the paintings. The works in this series play between the real and the virtual, the natural and the artificial, chance and control.
